Before we discuss the aspect of home remedies for yeast infection we must first understand: What is a Yeast Infection?
A yeast infection is usually caused by a fungus called Candida albicans. These organisms are normally found in small numbers in the mucus membranes in the human body such as the eyes, vagina, penis, etc. Yeast infection occurs when the number of these organisms increases beyond a certain level. The estimation is that three out of four women will have a vaginal yeast infection in their lifetime.
Research indicated that some factors that contribute to vaginal yeast infection include pregnancy, diabetes, steroids, birth control pills, stress, and antibiotics. Yeast infection is also more common after menopause due to declining estrogen levels, which thin the vaginal walls.
Yeast infection is very uncomfortable and irritating and it is documented that untreated vaginal yeast infection can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, a condition which can scar the fallopian tubes and cause infertility. In pregnant women, untreated vaginal yeast infection can result in premature delivery and low birth weight.
In women the symptoms include itching and burning in the vagina, swelling, itching and burning of the skin around the vagina, vaginal discharge, burning sensation when urinating and pain during sexual intercourse. In men the symptoms would include rash or swelling on the tip of the penis, a red / sore head, dry cracked skin, itching, pain during sex, impotence, pain when urinating, and, in some instances, a smelly discharge.
